THE LONG LOST ERA OF READING COMICS

Comics used to be one of the most precious possession during our childhood. From Chacha Choudhary and Tinkle to Marvel and DC Comics, we used to have a huge collection of our favourite comic books and how can we forget Raj Comics which gave us our home grown Indian Superheroes like Doga, Super Commando Dhruva, Nagraaj, Bhokal, Bhediya, Anthony, Parmanu, Inspector Steel and the likes?

But with the change of pace and modernity the children now have forgotten to read comic books. One of many reasons could be of course the addition of smart phones and social media in their lives. Also, children now-a-days are more likely to entertain themselves with dank memes and not so funny adult jokes over the internet then a legit comic book.

Even though comic books and comic hero origins are now easily available, people don’t pay attention to it and rather be searching for the adult contents.

Another reason is of course e-gaming craze in India, the addiction of online games in India is so damn high that even a class 7 kid is now more likely to be arguing with a parent to play the game, while handed with a good comic book or graphic novel they will just lay it off. Also, we all know that Hollywood is currently bringing a trend of movie adaptation of comic book stories which goes bonkers in box office once it gets released in the weekend and even those who doesn’t have any idea of comic books will watch such movies, not only that Netflix and other paid channels are also now creating their own superhero universe Popular being THE ARROWVERSE or INFINITE EARTH STORY-LINE in CBS

But if we are to state the fact, adaptions are seldom accurate as they makes a hell lot of changes in character arch, costumes, personalities, traits and looks. Some comic book superheroes in a movie or series universe now-a-days are more likely to have some shades of grey. Same could also be said video game adaption which sometimes is not well received.

The Hollywood’s trend of movie adaptation was also followed in India when Raj Comic’s

Doga was about to have a film adaptation being produced by Anurag Kashyap and Kunaal Kapoor in the lead, along with a web series for Super Commando Dhruva were in plans but never got to see the light of day.

Also the ever growing popularity of Hollywood comic books have now brought Raj Comics’ sells to alower level and they do not produce a long run anymore and are opting for mini-series though some of their popular franchises like Anthory, Bhediya and Nagraaj has been resurrected.

India needs to appreciate the importance of reading comic books once again before going to watch a movie adaptation or web series adaptation also we shall learn appreciate the talents of our own comic book writers and producers as much as we love and respect the legendary Mr. Stan Lee.
