Fashion designing is full-fledged Industry today. It has made a huge impact on our society and culture. It is well accepted as a career option all over the world. The history of fashion refers to the development behind garments, shoes, accessories, and their design and construction.
CHARLES FEDRICK WORTH was the first designer of the world, who started as draper, and then set up a fashion house in Paris from 1826 to 1895. He was the first person who told his customers, what kind of clothes will suit them. In the 19thcentury, various firms of fashion houses came into business. Before mid-19thcentury, the haute couture and ready-to-wear did not really exist. At that time the major pieces of women’s wear were made by the dressmakers and seamstresses with the body measurements which is directly fitted according to her body shape.
In 1800’S:
The period refers from 1800’s to 1899 was called late Victorian era. While 1890’s to 1900’s is called as mauve decade. Bustle dresses, evening gowns that are made of fine silk and sharp tailored shirts and jackets were made out of thick wool and linen, was very popular in fashion in 1800’s. The colors that were used widely in this era was bright and bold colors (peacock blue, apple green, purple and royal red, cream, white and pastels).
In 1900’S:
This period was known as “Edwardian era” in England. It was also known as “La belle epoque” means beautiful age. In this period women wore frill and layered gown with stiff corset to make a ‘S’ shape by pushing the chest forward and hips back. The women also wore feathers, lace and pearls,
In 1920’s :
At the beginning of 1920 women wore high waisted rather than barrel shaped outfit and tunic style tops were very popular. However, later on the fashion of high waisted dropped to hip level for natural curves. Young and fashionable ‘flappers’ wore their hems at knee level with neutral stockings and colorful gathers. Jewellery was prominent including large brooches and long strings of pearls. Hair was bobbed and tight fitted bell hat was very popular.
IN 1930’s:
The drop waist fashion of previous decade gave a slinky femininity in 1930’s. Bias cut into the design of the dresses which cause fabric to skim over the body curves were introduced. The evening made of silky satin that had low scooping back. In day time wool suits and knee length skirts were worn.
In 1940s:
In 1940s, the tailored suits were very popular. But other than that, women did prefer to wore squared shoulders with narrow hips and skirt length that would just fall beneath knee. The colors that were very popular in this time was red, white, blue, army green. Also, the prints that were in is floral, small dots, checks and thin stripes.
In 1950s:
In 1950s most of dresses were halter neck, sleeveless or boat neck. The colors that were used in 1950s was black, blue, red. And in summer, pink, yellow, white and teal were used. In this decade housewife’s wore full circular skirts, also known as swing dress and the males they wore donned suits and fedora hats.
In 1960s:
In this era, full swing dresses, cigarettes pants, pencil dresses, twin sets were very popular. A more tailored pencil dress and a crop jacket suit with flats and pillbox hats, and mod dresses, black and white go-go dresses and mini-skirts to get a youthful look and shape. By late 60s the hippies in tribal prints came. And the colors that were used were bright colors, color-block and flower power prints.
From 1970 to 1980:
(well this one is my favorite)
In this period narrow tops, wide leg pants and maxi dresses and pants were in fashion. The length of the dresses and skirts went short as possible to hot pants, mini-skirts and short dresses with platform boots being very popular in this era. The style of the hippies now translates into loose clothing as tunics, maxi dress, frills and sheer fabric. The bohemian fashion introduced in the 1970s which simplified with more prints, details, layers and exaggerating styles. The disco life was the glam version in 1970s with more sequins, more glitter, metallic colors, white and glamorous jumpsuits. The jumpsuits and maxi dresses were some of the ionic dresses of this time (between 1970-1980). The beauty of this era was all about LONG LASHES for both upper and lower lines which gave a doll effect. Bright eye-shadows and in the lips- bright and peachy lip shade. Then the wrap dress came, it was not the first time that wrap dress came but this time it was all about comfort that reached to the new heights.
From 1980 to 1990:
This period was also known as eclecticism decade. This decade was all about style and perfect lifestyles and also called as supermodel era. The major fashion icon in this era was Princess DIANA. The style of this decade was mainly about “the more is sexier”. Whether it be office wear, with strong and contrasting colors and broad shoulders dress. If you go for funky look Pairing with voluminous hair, neon colors and denim. Whereas, edgier fashion was all about black, leather, animal prints and t-shirts with motives. The colors that were mainly used was pastels, neon, red, blue and yellow.
From 2000’s to 2010:
In this period, crop tops, halter necks, low- waist jeans and skirts were famous at this era. The tops were matched with the cargo pants. In this time, the most popular style was showing off the name tags of the fashion brands (Chanel, LV, Gucci), in the bags, scarves, belts even on the clothes. It was like an accessory. The bohemian look was also in trend on those days, maxi dresses, maxi skirts to give that flowy easy-breezy look. Also, the most cringy style of this era was that low-rise denim (I mean very very low), to make your underwear visible. The makeup was with thin eyebrows, bright eye-shadows and lots of bronzer, lots of blush and lots of lip-gloss, (so many lots, phew!).
