REVISITING HIP HOP

Hip hop or Rap music is a form of upbeat and energetic music that originated around 70’s, late 80’s and mid 90’s and was mostly popularized by African Americans when African funk and Jazz and RnB was already flourishing in America. Back in that era Hip Hop music used to talk about sociopolitical status, urban culture, street life, poverty and unemployment. From underdog legends like Tupac Shakur to highly respected MC’s like 50 Cent and NOTORIOUS B.I.G., they took the scene of Rap music to the next level and it garnered such a mainstream recognition that the music found its way amongst the Latin Americans, Spanish Jazz bands, Street dance groups as well as white Americans.

However, if theoretically spoken, the US senates deemed rap music as Anti-American or

Anti-Government and Anti-Religious because of its protest-full lyrics and also raised a campaign once to Bann the hip hop scene in global level by seeing the violent aspects of the Hip Hop culture in late 90’s because in that period the two factions of Hip Hop; the East Coast and the West Coast was in a war against each other for takeovers to the point that both sides saw mass murder and blood, because Tupac Shakur was shot dead in the street by rival group as well as his mentor B.I.G few months later. Also, many of us are familiar with Mary Elizabeth Aitcheson “Tipper” Gore and her organization PARENTS MUSIC RESOURCE CENTER who was hell-bent and still is to censor music with her infamous “Parental Advisory” label on most records albeit or all genres of music.

But in 2000’s Hip Hop saw a revival with the emergence of rap artists who came up to become legends like Eminem, Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg and the likes, also this was the time when hip hop music found its place in the pop culture and mainstream and songs were becoming more radio friendly. But controversy found its place among the hip hop culture once again when artists like Beyonce and Jay-z were being accused of being Satanists because of their extravagant music videos and live shows, along with domestic violence and dope charges against Snoop Dogg and Eminem himself.

However, in modern day scenario hip hop has been revived with new soundscapes and

fusion, since rap artists now-a-days are more likely to collaborate with artists from other genres. Recent being the infamous collaboration between Post Mallon and Mr. Ozzy Osbourne of English metal Band Black Sabbath that took the internet by storm.

So we believe that in modern day, hip hop will find its place in the global music scene once again.
