A STRONG MESSAGE ON CYBER BULLYING AND ITS EFFECTS

Cyber Bullying and internet trolls is a burning and most sensitive issue in the modern society. In the modern world of internet where everything becomes a meme material and people are defamed or trolled, some of these constant trolling can have an adverse effect on minors, teenagers as well as adults.

In my recent experience, while talking to a

musician called Nigel D Shira, from Shillong, I came through the story of a young girl in her early 20’s named Dedera Sisa, who was suffering from a chronic condition, that became a bane for her eventually till she breathed her last on 14th February 2020, that is valentine’s day, the day when the rest of the world was celebrating love. Her death might be caused by a rare type of sickness, but the constant trauma that she had suffered from the netizens, the constant trolling and bullying over social media platform took its toll on her. Dedera was young and had a lot ahead of her, but she lost a battle that was unfortunate for her and her family. I came through this incident in most probably by the end of February or sometimes in March but back then I had no clue about she being a victim of cyberbullying and so I tried to dig more about it and the world needed to know more.

And so, to tell her story and to promote anti-cyberbullying through music, musician like Nigel D Shira and Mr. Andre Momin, a friend of Dedera Sisa, from Meghalaya came up with a 19 artist’s collaboration music video called, “In my reminiscence” that touches the aspects of various forms of guitar based music, from Indian classical to jazz, to rock, to melodic guitar shredding instrumental and progressive jazz fusion.

The collab featured some of the best musicians from the region like Barry Kharnaior, Gugu

Sekhose, Dolrich Marak, Tobu Sangma, Imnainla Jamir, Gifford Marak, Senti Longkumer, Kangkan Rabha, Gautam Brahma, Orai Basumatary and the likes, and also features messages from her friends and family and some of the renowned musicians and friends from Tura as well as Japan.

We congratulate Mr. Nigel, Mr. Andre and all the artists involved in the project and pay our condolences to Late Dedera Sisa and promise to be with her family in the toughest of times.

And also we take a pledge that no one has to suffer such ordeal again in the near future. Cyber bullying is punishable under law and one can directly file an FIR against the perpetrator and can get justice. Also we would love to convey to our government to build a more anti cyberbullying law in the region and also to the Anti-Cyberbullying cell to work efficiently. And also, if a girl is being mentally or sexually harassed over the internet, it’s high time that she opens up about it in front of her closed ones. The more one keeps quiet, the more troublesome a situation can become.

On the top of that, we welcome the effort of our musicians that they are bringing such

sensitive issues into their arts and creations. I hope in coming days some more musicians would take a step to bring in such social causes into their compositions and help those in need. This collab clearly shows that music needs to carry a message, a theme and so, we can’t be happier about this noble gesture.

The following video tells her story farther.
