2000s:- The Golden Era of Assamese Cinema

Since like 2010 itself, we Assamese movie goers have been complaining about the obvious same old thing that, Assamese movies are going nowhere in the matter of concept, character presentation, story-telling, music, screenplay and the overall ingredient for a full-on entertaining plot despite some of the movies coming up with better narrative. This complain was justified, because since the end of 2008 or so itself the Assamese film industry was falling from grace when Direct to home trend of the west was taking over the Industry and just about anyone were focused on making a small budget movie with a hand-held camera and poor to average level technology and Animation, because of which some of the movie stars from that era were left with the option to enter the mobile theater phenomenon of Assam.

But if we are to represent the history, the Assamese movie industry was never like this in its early stage. The conceptual revolution in Assamese cinema were already starting by the mid-90s and the stories were getting more intriguing and logical. Towards the half of 2000s Assamese movie started to present more coming of an age story that would show the harsh realities of the world, unemployment, moral choices, drivel towards insanity and redemption which was seen over movies like MON JAI and NAYAK. Along with that that era also presented us with straightforward family drama and romance, along with action movies. Characters were lovable and relatable, acting was flawless and screenplays were impressive. Also, this was the time when comedy was a key factor no matter what genre a movie might be falling into, possibly every movie used to have a character with comic relief and well maintained comic timing. Also, if I were to talk about music and how it presents a scene, were perfectly done and the songs only used to appear until plot demands it to have instead of them being intentionally scattered in between to drag the plot and distract us from the story or logic behind it.

However, we are not denying the fact that in modern times, we are getting a revival in the industry since Assamese movie industry have learned to accept two things, technology and boldness which is indeed a key factor in today’s standards of entertainment in any kind of audio-visual media because movies like Kotha Nodi or Aamis were really an eye opener for those who were holding on to that complain for long and been ignoring the beauty of our own industry’s talents and were more likely to spend some extra money over an over hyped Bollywood movie, a South movie dubbed in Hindi or a Hollywood one either in its original language or re-dubbed into more accessible format and language. We hope that in coming years Assamese movie industry would rise to its glory once again.
